Beyond Men’s Headshots

Had the pleasure of shooting Steve W. in my studio this past week.  When he walked in I immediately knew he was a candidate for a “more creative” type headshot.  So, here we would like to point out a tone we use all the time call “Platinum Tone,” and what we do to make it look good.   Platinum tone is a variation on B&W on the “cold” side of the temperature spectrum.  It is classy, and classical.  We offer it as an “add-on” to a regular session, and use it quite a bit.  With Steve here we did a few things.  Of course? We’re not going to tell you the recipe to “all our secrets,” but at the end we add heavy grain which completes the Platinum tone to create the feel of a heavy-grained black and white film look. So, just a head’s up (pun intended) to point out that when you walk into a professional headshot photographer‘s studio you should always get the best you deserve.  At our local headshot and  portrait studio (and on location) we prove day- in -and- day- out that a headshot’s not “just a headshot” but can be much much more.

Headshot Golden Rules

We like tones and grain!  When Chris (a local attorney) came in to our studio for a corporate headshot we immediately saw that his “look” lent itself to more than just the standard “head and shoulders” which of course we were happy to provide him with, though. So, while he was there we shifted the lights around a little bit to add a bit of drama and in post-production did a few twists and turns.  In this case we opted to crop and tilt to bring the viewer to the eyes of the subject (which we lightened up a bit for emphasis.)  We also added a nice, warm tone (“Platinum Palladium,”) and added some grain as well (for a bit of a film look.)  So after it was all over, Chris got a nice, (standard corporate)  headshot for his press release as well as something dramatic for future web page, social networking such as LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. also.  Please feel free to ask about these types of shots when you book with us.

Corporate Headshots / Business & Business Casual

Hello, ya’ll.  Today I would like to point out what would be a few good ideas if you are considering getting your business headshot portrait done with us (or another source.)  Since we have a coupon available for 50% off on a second headshot, a lot of our clients come in for their corporate headshot and add a casual shot as well.  The issue becomes that sometimes they misinterpret what “casual” is.  So for the sake of keeping it simple, let’s just assume “casual” should mean “business casual” or a “casual Friday” type look at your office.  I cannot tell you how many guys just figure they can rip off their suit coat, open up the collar on their white shirt and pull off a casual look.  Add in the folks who bring an old turtleneck (“it’s my favorite!!”) and / or bring / show up with wrinkled stuff that just does not look good.  Not wagging my finger here though.  Just trying to help. LOL.  So, in an effort to do so? Please see photo above, which is of a recent client named Curtis who showed up ready to go for both shots.  He brought outfits on a hanger  (thanks, Curtis) so as to make sure they were pressed and fresh.  He brought along two jackets, three ties and three shirts.  One for the formal and two choices for the casual.  Notice how fresh and sharp the casual shot looks?  Shirt is starched and right off the hanger, fresh from the dry cleaner.  Result is that Curtis looks casual, yet sharp.  A guy  you would want to either hire or do business with.  This way he get’s to choose from both shots for different use, and at the same time looks totally professional in both.   So, hope that helps if anyone is considering this type of professional headshot in the future with us, or (gasp) our competitors (VBG.)  Till then, later for now.

Student Headshots

This week I met a very nice young man named Kenneth.  I got the call from him inquiring about the price for a professional headshot and upon my inquiry it turns out Kenneth is a student of UTD (University of Texas at Dallas.) For his present and future use, he felt he would need a nice looking, professional business portrait to go with printed materials, web page, social media etc. I really admire a person  his age  (he is nineteen) being ambitious and was happy to speak with him.  Turns out that Kenneth, like most students was on a bit of a budget, and I could hear some disappointment when we discussed pricing for headshot photography services.  Luckily he came to the right place as I am a big believer in “paying forward” and / or “giving back” and I made suitable arrangements with Kenneth to work out something reasonable for him.  I will always do the same for those seeking employment in this crazy job market we are in, as well.  I have done this these last few years and it is a “win-win” any way you look at it.  My feeling is Kenneth will probably either be the head of, or owning his own company eventually!  I’ll be looking forward to a call from his executive assistant to set up a location shoot for an office full of headshots sometime soon.

Dallas Actor Headshots

Today I had the pleasure of meeting and shooting photos with Nancy, and actor in Dallas doing some work away from her New Orleans hometown.  Now, I normally am a “corporate type” of headshot shooter, but every once and a while upon request I will take a shot  (pun intended) at actor or model headshots.  I really like shooting this type of stuff, but it’s not my usual area of expertise.  Nancy needed a quick turnaround for some auditions and I was happy to help provide her with a few files she could get printed right away.  We started off in the studio and went with a nice, simple gray background.  Eventually we moved out onto our alcove, which is right outside our studio door for some available light headshots which turned out well.  Nancy was a lot of fun to work with and made it easy for me to transition a bit from corporate to actor headshots today.  If you agree and are interested always feel free to let us know if you would like to shoot with us.
