Group Photos on Location
Had some fun this past Thursday night shooting group photos _and_ headshots (both at the same time / yikes) at the Four Seasons Hotel in Dallas. The headshots were for the Board of Governors, and the group shots were for the Sports Club’s various committees. We have had the honor of shooting the photos at this event every year for about (as far as I can remember) well over ten years. They have a nice social gathering, and a meeting which makes it ideal to get everyone in one place. After it’s all over the photos are displayed in the Sports Club at Las Colinas, which is adjacent to the hotel. This kind of shoot is fun as well as challenging. For this, my associate Clint helps out as we do two totally separate setups. The hotel is (of course) a joy to work with and they have everything set up in advance for us. To pull off this type of shoot it takes full cooperation from all staff involved and when you work with a group like the Four Seasons you can count on it. The setup consists of a few risers, pipe and drape, and chairs for the various groupings in a large hotel meeting room where we also set up a separate section just for the headshots. We do about six or more groups and about ten headshots all within a fast and furious one hour session. For these type shoots we use Alien Bee 1600 lights with very large silver umbrellas for the groups. To keep it simple I use Nikon Speedlights for the headshots with simple shoot-though umbrellas fore the lighting and a nice Denny Manufacturing canvas background. We are posting one of the group shots here and will add on some headshots next post.

Corporate Headshots at Events /3
Hello ya’ll. Although it has been a really slow month in the headshot business (for me, anyway) we have been cranking out corporate events left and right. These are always fun as you get to meet great people in a nice environment. Most of these events we have been shooting in April did not require corporate headshots to be shot during the event, but rather they were of the typical documentary type, usually for archiving purposes. We did a nice one for the Four Seasons Hotel, as well as Microsoft and others. Fun stuff. But back to headshots at corporate events. Now you have them “moved in and moved out” the post production process begins. Your client is going to be happy you “slated them” as they typically have no clue who the hundred or so folks were that walked through the line to have their photos taken. We typically only shoot 4 shots of each person at these events to keep the editing to a minimum. More than that would drive us nuts and double post production. Most photographers are going to be using Lightroom or Photoshop (Bridge) to do this type of editing and it is a fairly simple process to just “star” the named slate and then “star” your first pick (of the four views.) After you have done this the appropriate number of times you simply “filter” the “stared” shots and put them side by side. Rename the chosen headshots, e.g. “doe-john.jpg” and you are all set. Once you rearrange the folder to “view by file name” you will have a nice folder full of headshots done alphabetically and a client that loves you to death.
