Our Studio Alcove
Just a “head’s up” (pun intended) that if you are interested in a bit more of a “less traditional” background we have a great alcove at our studio which totally lend’s itself to this function. The alcove is covered and allows us to use ”open shade” and in addition has large, diffused skylights as well. We mix in a bit of soft studio light from an “Ocatabox” to add some sparkle to the eyes and you end up with what is still a nice, corporate, albeit more casual portrait. We shot this one of David recently (this March) and we think it worked out well. If interested please mention this post and we will arrange for this before you arrive.

Headshot Window Light
Don’t you love it? For all the gear we photographer’s schlepp trying to attain our portrait goals sometimes the best lighting is free and right there in front of us. The other day we were at the Dallas Four Seasons Hotel again. This time we were at the “Sports Club of Las Colinas” next door finishing up an assignment of member “Club Champs” for a wall of prints inside the Sports Club. So we noticed this big, floor-to-ceiling double-door that looked like it could provide a nice, even light source for the portrait. So, we grabbed an available staffer “Erica” who was nice enough to sit-in for us while we readied the shot for the client (who was about ten minutes away from arriving.) Of course, Erica was somewhat resistant as she was a bit taken-back, not being ready to have her picture made, etc. But, as you can see, the results are beautiful. The window-light is just stunning. Soft, even and totally complimentary. For this type of shot we used the same exact (camera / lens / tripod /slow exposure, etc.) setup as the one in the post below, but _without_ any (yes, any) lighting. Just a quick post to share how nice a portrait can be without thousands of dollars worth of lighting gear. Of course, we got lucky and found it there. Does not always work that way. Just another tool to tuck away, and a “head’s up” to look for.

Our Alcove for Available Light Headshots
Hi Folks:
Just a head’s up for those of you who are considering having your headshot done at our Richardson, TX studio. Now that the weather is nice, we have been doing more and more outdoor headshots in our alcove, which is just adjacent to our studio. And, I mean almost “right out the door.” It is completly covered, so the lighting is “open shade” which can be very apealing when used corretly mixed in with a bit of strobe. We can also go completely “available” by moving in and around the area. For the most part, though being that your headshot is probably corporate we try to avoid the “trees and bushes” type background (looks like a park!) and stick to the brick / concrete parts while tossing the backgrounds completly out of focus. A nice look if you are “casual Friday,” or adding a more casual shot to your session while there. Here is a recent sample. Call us if you have any questions.
